How Polar Regions and Global Warming Affect the World…
The Polar Regions are some of the first to see effects of Global Warming and give the world a glance as to what is going to soon be in store for the rest of us. For example, in 1968 ice shelves began to break off of the Antarctic coast, a dangerous sign the Global Warming is progressing. Recently, the rest of the globe has begun to feel the effects of Global Warming with instances like El Nino. The following specific facts demonstrate the effects that Global Warming has on the Polar Regions.
The temperature increase may cause sea ice surrounding the polar landmasses to melt. This will cause sea levels to further rise and flood coastal areas of valuable wetlands and arable land. (2.)
The temperature increase in the ocean water will expand the volume of ocean water and increase the overall volume of the ocean. (2.)
The continual cooling of the stratosphere will create many more holes in the ozone, particularly over the Polar Regions. (1.)
Scientists were recently researching in the Arctic Sea. They expected to find ice sheets 6-9 feet thick, but in most areas they were only 4 feet thick. This is another instance demonstrating how warming temperatures have caused ice in Polar Regions to melt. (4.)
The largest ice shelf, the Larsen Ice Shelf, has broken away from the Antarctic continent. This shelf is expected to continue to crumble throughout the summer. The melting of large ice shelves like the Larsen could eventually raise sea levels. (3.)
