Although I cannot claim complete fluency in Japanese anymore I try to develop my language ability (or desperately try to cling onto). I am particularly interested in the way that translators make decisions or sacrifices necessary to bring content into a new language and culture. I am always amazed at the almost arcane ability that the best translators and interpreters posess to bring us this media noting that they too face what Spivak dubbed as the "Politics of Translation" in her book of that title.
I cannot compare my abilities to any true professional such as those who translate novels or interpret live events. I'm usually left to the realm of fan translations of video games, news, and video. Although even then I lack the day-to-day reinforcement to keep things up. I find myself constantly second guessing, sometimes well, at others not so well, the decisions that I force myself to make.
